World Cup finals don’t normally produce 5 tries. Australia and New Zealand like to play positively and we got to see an exciting and entertaining match. This is unlike the cagey tight affairs that we have seen before, like in 2011.
There were some awesome tries but New Zealand were deserved winners. Dan Carter played one of his best games ever. Kiwis tend to just get stuck in and this sometimes camouflages their emotions. I have never seen Carter so pumped up before. When it mattered he made the move, kicked a drop-goal thus moving the game that much further away from the Aussies. Well done Dan on an excellent career.
Talking about excellent careers wasn’t it amazing to see Ritchie McCaw respond ” I still don’t want it to end to be honest. Look at the moment I am still part of this team, I’m going to enjoy today. How could you get enough of this? so we will worry about that after today…..” when asked if this is the end?
Richie is incredible he has played to such a high level for so many years while his hunger for the game is undiminished. What he does on a rugby pitch is just unbelievably good. He is a great athlete and like so many Kiwi flankers is as tough as they come but where Richie stands head and shoulders above everyone else is what an intelligent player he is. I haven’t seen a better player in my lifetime.
Sonny Bill Williams showed for the second time now what a decent bloke he is. A young Kiwi fan ran onto the pitch in the hope of meeting one of his heroes only to be flattened in a tackle by a security guard. Sonny Bill pulled the kid to his feet and away from the security guard and returned him to his mother then presented the kid with his own gold medal. This after the very sportsmanlike gesture of Sonny Bill by giving Jesse Kriel a few words of encouragement and helping him to his feet after SA had lost to New Zealand in the semi-final.
I enjoyed this RWC thoroughly, there were so many great matches, so many great rugby moments, a great atmosphere and an incredible final. New Zealand are rightly the world champions once again.
