Are the people running rugby in South Africa going to do the right thing ? What worries me is that SARU is not run professionally and the string of bad decisions made by the clueless administrators in SARU will continue even though their previous decisions have proven to be such big mistakes.
Allister Coetzee should never have been appointed as coach of South Africa. The Springboks have evolved their gameplan to the gameplan employed by the Stormers when AC was in charge of that Franchise.
What has worried me all week is how many South African Journalists were talking up the Springboks and truly believed that the Boks stood a chance against the All Blacks. The reaction of so many South Africans to the inclusion of Morne Steyn. They truly believed the ship had been steadied by the Domkrag win against Australia in Pretoria.
I can moan all I want about the stupidity of the people running South African rugby but how will that help. I really think that SARU should take the Lions as a model and try to emulate their systems.
The Lions have achieved a lot and appear to have a bright future and have gone toe to toe with New Zealand teams. Surely this should be a reason to look at their model and implement that into the national set-up.
Franco Smith of the Cheetahs has been public in his admiration for the way the Lions have been going about their business. He has obviously tried to do a similar thing in Bloemfontein and the results speak for themselves. The Cheetahs have so far gone through the Currie Cup undefeated.
Domkraggers keep pointing to the hiding the Lions got in the Superrugby final. Let’s have a look at that ‘Hiding’. The Hurricanes scored 2 tries to nil. Let us compare that to the Springboks against the All Blacks. The All Blacks scored 9 tries to nil. Which one is better?
In the Superugby final the Lions actually ran more metres than the Hurricanes 421m to 287m they had 130 carries compared to the Hurricanes 110 and beat 17 defenders to the Hurricanes 9. These stats show that the Lions were running at the Hurricanes and went down fighting.
Let us now compare that with the stats from the Springbok v All Blacks test in Durban.
South Africa scored 0 tries to New Zealand’s 9 tries
South Africa made 148 metres compared to 754 metres by the All Blacks
South Africa made 56 carries compared to 162 by the AB’s
South Africa beat 3 defenders while the AB’s beat 40.
Is this how you want the Springboks to play? Never trying to attack the AB’s and just hanging on for dear life.Would the Lions systems at least be better than this Domkrag circus?
