I have already written a few articles on the wisdom or lack thereof regarding the Springbok selection. Springbok squad for the tests. Roelof Smit was in all likelyhood going to make his debut against England but is now ruled out because of a pectoral muscle tear. South Africa lost Francois Louw due to injury then Jaco Kriel. Other options might have been Marcel Coetzee but he is out with a long term injury. Heinrich Brussouw and Schalk Burger are unavailable. South Africa are in a spot of bother. I’m not sure where Sikhumbuzo Notshe is.
Whoever is chosen at openside is likely to face the very experienced Chris Robshaw. The importance of having a specialist in this position can not be stressed enough. Allister Coetzee has tried to deflect any concern by once again talking down to the media and the public by saying rugby is very different in the Northern hemisphere. AC maybe you should explain that to all the clubs around Europe that pay big money for decent opensiders.
The player that gets selected there will not be an openside specialist which is nothing new for Domkrag coaches who regularly select players out of position. It is likely Nizaam Carr will play openside for the Boks. This means Warren Whitely is the only number 8 with 4 blindside flankers in Willem Alberts, Teboho Mahoje, Jean Luc du Preez and now Uzair Cassiem. Alberts and Carr can quite easily cover eighth man but there is no balance to this back row (loose trio).
